London is becoming more open and quieter than previously.
The world’s cities are gradually reopening, none more so than London, where the majority of COVID-19 limitations were lifted on “freedom day” earlier this year.
However, despite the relaxation of some regulations, part of the tranquillity that many locals enjoyed over the previous 1.5 years has been preserved in London.
Stephen Glenn, an associate product manager at Chauffeur service who resides in London, claims that overall, the amount of noise there is nothing compared to what it was before the pandemic.
Although I believe some important contributions have declined, perhaps this will continue to rise slowly in the years to come, he added.
“Air traffic has significantly decreased, which is especially obvious for people who live west of the city. Because more people are probably working from home, the volume of traffic has decreased. People have grown accustomed to traveling with a purpose, and I believe part of that behavior has persisted.
He claimed that being compelled to work remotely has shown a great number of companies that working from home can be the norm rather than the exception.
According to him, “this has radically changed views toward going to work, making it for many something to look forward to instead of a duty or requirement.”
That has meant less-crowded commutes and less yelling over the din of busy streets for many Londoners who remain to work in the city.
However, many people want to preserve their newfound sense of tranquility in their life as London is going to return to some degree of the buzzy dynamic city it once was. especially in light of the already-established effects of noise pollution on productivity and health.
LONDON’s SOUNDS
To determine how noisy the recently opened city was, we invited Stephen to drive a BCL Electric Class Jaguar I-PACE around the city in June.
He made use of Decibel X, a pre-calibrated sound meter recording program that measures sound strength using decibel units that are weighted to approximate human hearing or the “A” scale. At three key locations in the city—Kings Cross, Oxford Street, and Piccadilly Circus—he assessed the noise level both inside and outside the car.
The strength of the sound is measured in decibels. Because they are logarithmic, the sound intensity rises more quickly than the sound volume. A sound at 20 dB, for instance, is 10 times more strong than one at 10 dB.
The sound levels on the sidewalks of Kings Cross and Oxford Street were recorded at a little over 70 dB. (A). The Piccadilly Circus outside was a little quieter, between 60 and 70 dB, or around the volume of a regular conversation (A).
The sound level recorded inside an Electric Class BCL at each site was at least 10 dB(A) lower than the noise level on the street. You can access the peace a premium Black Car Lux offers on your journey around London by downloading the Black Car Lux app.
